Bradley Joseph Skene (July 19, 1954 – October 1, 1995)

My brother taught me that death is not about dying but more about learning to live!

From Curt

Why I Wrote This Page

Curt’s brother, Brad Skene

Because my brother Brad deserves a shoutout, and this book is the best place I know to give him one.

Brad was eight years older than me. When our parents divorced we were separated, so for much of my youth I barely knew him. That made the years we did have together all the more precious.

Brad was a quiet man who was happy to let others have the spotlight, and yet so much good came from him. He loved older people. He could sit with them for hours, making them the centre of his world.

When he found out he was dying, he made it his mission to remind people to start living. He gave talks, sharing story after personal story about the lessons you learn when you find out your time is up. His message was simple and powerful: have a good time living, because you’re a long time dead. Brad is also the one who taught me the power of stories, and you’ll find that lesson on page after page of this book.

Learning you are dying puts every other problem in perspective, including losing your job. Brad knew his time was short and that nothing could change it, and he chose to keep living anyway. Brad would tell you that learning he was dying reminded him to pay attention while living. He chose to smile, and he was always grateful for the forty-one years he had. If he could face that with a smile, you can face this job search with the same spirit.

So this is my thank you, Brad, for being there for me over the years. This one’s for you.
